1988年以一首輕快的舞曲”Never Gonna Give You Up”奪下全美單曲榜雙週冠軍的英倫偶像男歌手Rick Astley（瑞克艾斯里），以他混厚的獨特嗓音，稚嫩的笑容與流暢稅耳的優美旋律而走紅於國際歌壇，並且成為當年英國銷售最好的單曲。同時也在包括美國、澳洲、德國等15個國家得到排行冠軍。接著的單曲〈Together Forever〉則是在美國得到冠軍，英國亞軍；重唱Nat King Cole的經典歌曲〈When I Fall In Love〉則得到英國排行亞軍；另外〈It Would Take A Strong Man〉在美國也有前10名的佳績。首次出擊的他也因此榮獲葛萊美最佳新進藝人獎提名。首張專輯《Whenever You Need Somebody》也同樣地奪得英國專輯排行榜冠軍，並在半年內光在英國本地就賣了超過一百萬張。

對首張專輯，即能創下如此輝煌的成績如獲得歡迎，主要歸功於Stock/Altken/Waterman的製作功力和Rick Astley非常獨特且淳厚的嗓音及其白人靈魂唱腔，不論是輕快的舞曲或是優美的抒情歌，由他演唱起來，都令人百聽不厭，89年金唱片”Hold Me In Your Arms”也有2支單曲”She Want To Dance With Me”、 ”Take Me To Your Heart”打入Top 10。
